Earlier this month, we offered our employees the chance to spend the day volunteering with OzHarvest, rescuing food from landfill and distributing it to charities that help feed people in need.

We received a great response with plenty of interested employees keen to learn more about food rescue. With only three spots up for grabs, names were randomly selected for each day and the three lucky volunteers were Teina Bishop, Jeff Evans and Nicki Hopley.

Teina was first up, arriving at the Hamilton Depot at 6.45 am on the 7th of December to meet his van driver and “total legend” Jack. They immediately set about visiting all the Woolworths and Aldi’s from Hamilton down to Swansea, picking up food and stacking it into crates in the back of their van. They then dropped off all the food at community halls and other venues.

Teina said, “Overall it was a great experience and it felt good to help those in need. I will be doing more volunteering with OzHarvest in the future.”

On the 14th of December it was Jeff’s turn to turn up at the Hamilton depot bright and early. Jeff shared the day with van rider Pete who is a permanent OzHarvest employee. Their day was mainly based around Maitland, Thornton and Rutherford. Jeff said, “It’s unbelievable the service OzHarvest offers the community with the assistance of the church groups and charities that distribute the food. It was fantastic to be a part of it for the day.”

Together, Jeff and Pete picked up 692kg worth of food for redistribution.

We will cover Nicki’s day in the van in the new year!
